Outlaw Writers: From Kathy Acker to Simone De Beauvoir

In order to OCCUPY, one must develop an outsider’s sensibility. In this combination seminar and writing workshop the group will explore ‘outsiderness’ and subversion in the writings of authors and artists such as Kathy Acker, Jack Kerouac, Joan Didion, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Simone de Beauvoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Albert Camus, Diane DiPrima, David Wojnarowicz, Mary Wolzencraft, Franz Kafka, Diane Arbus, and others.

The meetings will also include in-class writing and discussions of prose and poetry techniques.

The instructor, Alan Kaufman, is dean of the Free University and author of such acclaimed memoirs and novels as DRUNKEN ANGEL, MATCHES and JEW BOY has also edited the anthologies THE OUTLAW BIBLE OF AMERICAN LITERATURE, THE OUTLAW BIBLE OF AMERICAN POETRY, and THE OUTLAW BIBLE OF AMERICAN ESSAYS.
